Many perspectives on the benefits of teleconferencing are covered in reviews about the media, but the actual human experience is sometimes neglected. Are people getting used to this new form of connecting for business, and increasingly personal purposes as well? What makes being in a teleconference enjoyable or useful to the average person attending were moderating such a meeting?
A few ideas:
Time and resource efficiency
A teleconference spares the attendee of experiencing the logistics of traveling to a remote meeting site or workplace, paying money for commuting, or having to compromise on beating at a time convenient to the travel and commuting costs of all participants. This is crucially important the larger the distances are between the participant’s normal location and the site of the traditional physical conference. It also naturally encourages the conference organizers to ensure that what is shared at any in-person meeting truly was important enough to bring parties together, as opposed to meet virtually.
Minimizing of personality conflicts It is a fact of life that not everyone gets along with everyone else, and the modern teleconference minimizes personal conflict by way of not having the parties physically meet in person. This permits greater focus on the ideas and information imparted at the meeting, versus dwelling on irrelevant dynamics that make intrude upon the task at hand. The few conflicts that might spill over into the phone conversation can be more effectively shut down by the moderator that escalating in-person argument can.
Equality of access.Another nonbusiness interaction dynamic that may hinder traditional meetings is the perception of some participants that they had to make greater sacrifices to attend the conference (more difficult for longer commute, more work to do as the physical host, etc.) than did other attendees. Meeting by teleconference removes the distance factor, as each party gets to contribute more or less equally to the meeting. Thus the virtual meeting is able to give the participants a feeling that their contributions are just as relevant as any other party.
Confidentiality Since a teleconference session can be easily controlled by the organizer for secure connections and the control of the access, attendees may have better peace of mind that the information ideas shared are protected from unapproved distribution. This may be helpful to parties who need guarantees but cannot be at a specific location to impart sensitive information in person. Modern teleconferencing replaces the confidentiality with suitable protections that are acceptable for most purposes.
